Federal Agencies Propose Rule to Implement S.A.F.E. Act Mortgage Loan Originator Registration Requirements

More info…
“The S.A.F.E. Act requires the agencies to jointly develop and maintain a system for registering residential mortgage loan originators who are employees of agency-regulated institutions, including national and State banks, savings associations, credit unions, and Farm Credit System institutions, and certain of their subsidiaries. “

Fed Mortgage Efforts Prove Costly

The U.S. Federal Reserve’s program to keep mortgage rates low by buying securities and Treasury bonds so far has been costly and seems to be having a fleeting impact.

An analysis of the timing of the Fed’s purchases of mortgage-backed securities by J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. shows the Fed is “under water” on its portfolio by about 1%, and it would have to take about $5 billion in losses if it were to mark its portfolio to the market.

Blame it on Reagan

” Krugman points to the 1982 signing of the Garn-St. Germain Depository Institutions Act that deregulated mortgage financing, encouraged absurd levels of personal debt and ushered in a period of government deficit spending that while curtailed by Clinton was exacerbated by Bush to a point where we were caught with our pants down for the payoff of 25 years of deregulation and debt-binging.”
